Characteristics and differences between slag powder and fly ash
Author :
Slag powder and fly ash are two widely used auxiliary cementitious materials in the concrete industry. Most concrete production processes now incorporate one or two auxiliary materials. As a result, their performance is frequently compared by concrete technicians to seek more suitable concrete ratios.

Although these materials have certain similarities in their chemical composition, there are still significant differences in their impact on the performance of concrete. This difference is mainly based on the different proportions of oxides in each material component.
Both slag powder and fly ash can partially replace Portland cement in concrete applications. The reason why slag powder can be applied in large quantities in concrete is because the chemical composition of slag powder is closer to that of Portland cement compared to fly ash. In ordinary concrete, the content of slag powder can reach up to 50% (in some special applications, such as large volume concrete, the content of slag powder can reach 80%). The dosage of fly ash is usually controlled between 20% and 30%.
Fly ash is a byproduct produced after the combustion of coal powder in coal-fired power plants, and differences in raw materials can directly lead to fluctuations in the chemical composition of fly ash. Slag powder is a byproduct produced during the ironmaking process, and the entire process is strictly controlled. Therefore, even if the source of raw materials fluctuates, its chemical composition can still maintain relatively stable performance.
